about Bushehr

Bushehr is a southern city in Iran, beside the Gulf of Persian. The folklore music of this city is a music that is present in the daily lives of its people. It encompasses birth to death, festivity to war, suffering and labour, joy and sorrow. It depicts the braveness of the men and women, and portrays the specific regional and geographical characteristics. In order to understand this music, one must take into consideration the many factors that have affected the formation and the emergence of the present day music of Bushehr. First of all, Bushehr's geographical location has turned it into the residence and passage of many tribes and nations who have entered it due to reasons such as trade, military occupancy or immigration. This brought in the incorporation of many different instruments in the music of this city. For example, the entrance of African slaves into Bushehr had a large impact of the music of the city which became influenced by Black African music extensively. However, it should be noted that different nations did not always improve Bushehr, but destroyed the culture in some ways. The attack of the Arabs to the city in the Sasani period is an example, which resulted
n the annihilation of many historical and cultural artefacts. The second factor, which influenced Bushehr's music and culture, is the temporal migration of Bushehri peopleto Somali, Tanzania, China and India for work, sailing and trading. Also, the artistic link between the music of Bushehr and other region and tribes has been a great influence on creating the music present in Bushehr today. Among these links, we can point to the music of Jam and Dashtestan, both tribes in Bushehr, and also the music of Lor people in the regions of Hayat Davood and Liravi. The geographical and environmental features of Bushehr is the third factor, which have not only affected the music and art of the city, but also people's way of life, behaviour and speech. Hence, natural conditions, the warm weather, the sea, humidity and draught are elements in present in the music. For example, Neymeh is a traditional form of music, developed by people working at sea for harmony in group work or refreshment. The forth factor is the influence of Iran's culture
and customs on the music of Bushehr. The use of the national language and expressions, Iranian mythology and poems, the performance of national customs and traditions are among elements that have given a national feel to the music of Bushehr. Shah Name Khani ("Reading Shah Nameh", a book by Iranian poet Ferdosi), Masnavi (poem written by Rumi), Nezami Khani ("Reading Nezami", Iranian poet), and Khayyam Khani ("Reading Khayyam", Iranian poet) stand out among the other kinds of this music, which have gained a southern appearance by incorporation into the culture and art of the south. It should be noted that Busherh's music has influenced the national music of Iran, as well, such as Iranian Radif and parts of Dashti songs which have been affected by the common songs of people in tribal areas of Bushehr.
